How to pass the HI exam

  • 50 questions in 75 minutes is 1 minute 30 seconds each, the most generous pace in CMFAS. Use the time to read scenario questions twice.
  • Draw the healthcare framework once: government subsidies, MediSave, MediShield Life, MediFund, then private cover on top. Many questions test where each piece fits.
  • Know what MediSave can and can't pay for. Integrated Shield Plan riders, for example, must be paid in cash.
  • You need 35 out of 50 to pass.

Sample questions with answers

These are the questions in the free test above, with answers. Try the test first. You'll learn more by getting some wrong.

1. Singapore's healthcare financing is often described as 'S+3M'. The 3Ms are:
Answer: MediSave, MediShield Life and MediFund. Government subsidies (S) plus MediSave (savings), MediShield Life (basic insurance) and MediFund (safety net for the needy).
2. MediSave is:
Answer: A national medical savings account within CPF. MediSave is part of each member's CPF savings, set aside to pay for approved medical expenses and certain insurance premiums.
3. Who is covered by MediShield Life?
Answer: All Singapore citizens and permanent residents, for life, including those with pre-existing conditions. MediShield Life, launched in November 2015, gives universal lifetime basic coverage to all citizens and PRs, including pre-existing conditions.
4. An Integrated Shield Plan (IP) consists of:
Answer: MediShield Life plus additional private coverage from an insurer. An IP combines the MediShield Life component with a private insurer's additional coverage, often for higher ward classes or private hospitals.
5. Premiums for Integrated Shield Plan riders that cover deductibles and co-insurance must be paid:
Answer: In cash. MediSave can pay for MediShield Life and part of the IP's additional premium, but not for riders. Riders are paid in cash.
6. IP riders sold from April 2019 must include a minimum co-payment by the policyholder of:
Answer: 5%. New riders must have at least 5% co-payment, to curb over-consumption. A yearly cap on co-payment applies for treatment by panel or pre-authorised providers.
7. CareShield Life covers Singapore citizens and PRs born in or after which year automatically?
Answer: 1980. People born in 1980 or later are covered automatically (from age 30, or from 2020 if already 30 to 40 then). Older cohorts could join voluntarily.
8. CareShield Life pays when the insured is severely disabled, defined as being unable to perform at least how many of the 6 activities of daily living?
Answer: 3. Severe disability means being unable to perform at least 3 of the 6 ADLs: washing, dressing, feeding, toileting, walking or moving around, and transferring.
9. Critical illness policies in Singapore commonly use standard definitions for how many severe-stage illnesses set by the LIA?
Answer: 37. The LIA's standard definitions cover 37 severe-stage critical illnesses, which keeps policies comparable across insurers.
10. Disability income insurance mainly replaces:
Answer: Part of the insured's income if they can't work because of disability. It pays a monthly benefit, usually a proportion of pre-disability income, after a deferred period.
11. In a disability income policy, the 'deferred period' is:
Answer: The time before benefits start after the disability begins. Benefits begin only after the deferred period; a longer deferred period lowers the premium.
12. A hospital cash (income) policy typically pays:
Answer: A fixed daily amount for each day in hospital. Hospital cash pays a set amount per day of hospitalisation, regardless of the actual bill, to help with incidental costs.
13. MediFund is best described as:
Answer: An endowment fund set up by the government to help needy patients who can't afford their bills after other means. MediFund is the safety net for Singaporeans who still can't pay after subsidies, MediShield Life, MediSave and cash.
14. A pre-existing condition in private health insurance refers to:
Answer: A medical condition that existed before the policy began, which may be excluded or loaded. Private insurers may exclude pre-existing conditions or charge extra. MediShield Life, by contrast, covers them (with possible additional premiums).
15. Most private health policies include a waiting period after inception during which certain illnesses are not covered. Its purpose is to:
Answer: Prevent people from buying cover only after symptoms appear (anti-selection). Waiting periods guard against anti-selection by people who already suspect an illness.
